Paul Katon, of Gore, drove the 1951 Triumph Thunderbird he owns with his father Stan to British Motorcycle Day at Mandeville yesterday.

The annual event, which gathers riders of British-made motorcycles, is organised by Hartley Hay and Bob Vercoe, of Gore.

Mr Hay said this was the 28th time the pair had organised the event.

"There’s only two things in this world that are free and that’s the air we breathe and British bike day," Mr Hay said.

There was something special about British-made motorcycles.

"Ah British — they’re just lovely.

"They made the best bikes ever made."

While the day was a celebration of British motorcycles, riders with motorbikes made in other countries were also welcome, he said.

Mr Vercoe said there were about 60 British bikes and about 70 other brands.

"We had a fair old crew."

"Everyone is there for a yarn and that’s exactly what it’s about."

People travelled from as far away as Dunedin and Central Otago to take part.
