Blaze near Mossburn under control

A large fire near Mossburn in Southland has been contained after burning more than 2ha of land.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted when a controlled burn "jumped a firebreak" onTaylor Rd at West Dome Station about 3.30pm yesterday.

The fire, in mixed vegetation and fanned by westerly winds, was brought under control around 6.30pm by about 40 firefighters from Mossburn, Lumsden, Dipton, Balfour, Garston and Athol.

Two helicopters were used with the assistance of four appliances and three tankers from Te Anau, Lumsden and Mossburn.

Mossburn Chief Fire Officer Lance Hellewell urged landowners to be mindful of weather conditions when lighting fires.

A crew from Athol remained on site this afternoon to ensure no further flare-ups.
