Police are searching for a man who failed to stop for police then ditched his bike and fled on foot in Invercargill yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said police pursued the motorcyclist for his manner of driving and the motorcycle had been flagged as a vehicle of interest for police.

After the person failed to stop, there was a "very brief" police pursuit.

"It looks as though the rider has abandoned the bike and left the area on foot."

A reporter at the scene said they saw several police offers, along with a police dog, descend on a property near the intersection of Tweed and Venus Sts.

Police were stationed at the entrances and exists of neighbouring properties.

A motorcycle was seen lying on its side on the edge of the road at the corner of the roundabout between Tweed and Lindisfarne Sts.

Several police vehicles lined Tweed St at the time, including one parked close to Southland Girls’ High School. A woman driving past the scene said she saw ‘‘at least five police cars’’ parked around the area.

The man had not been located by last night and police inquiries were ongoing.
