Child rescued after being trapped under car

Emergency services have freed a child that was trapped under a vehicle that rolled between Riverton and Otautau.

Emergency services could not confirm exact details of the person who was trapped, but that person was initially reported to be seriously injured, and was flown to Southland Hospital by the Otago Rescue Helicopter.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said three other people in the car received minor injuries and were also taken to Southland Hospital, by ambulance.

Police confirmed they received a report at 10.47am today of a rolled car on Riverton-Otautau Rd and were initially at the scene with St John ambulance and Fire Services.

Firefighters from Otautau used airbags and chocks to lift the vehicle and rescue the child.

Four people were involved in the crash, including one child trapped under the car.

The child was reported to have had serious injuries, that has since been downgraded.

The child's exact injury status is not known.
