A scrub fire in Southland that covers farmland and Department of Conservation land has grown to 1300 hectares.

The blaze broke out yesterday afternoon when a burn-off got out of control at Mount Prospect, about 10km west of Te Anau.

Nine helicopters were used to fight it yesterday, along with urban and rural firefighters on the ground.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Riwai Grace said a chopper with an air controller onboard would go up for a recce this morning.

He said a plan would then be made about how to tackle the blaze.
