Two male occupants of a Toyota Landcruiser were treated for minor injuries yesterday afternoon after their vehicle and a milk tanker collided on State Highway 1 between Gore and Mataura at about 4pm yesterday, Sergeant Sharee Lietze of Gore said.

The driver of the tanker and his passenger, who were from the Gore area, were uninjured, she said.

A motorcyclist who was travelling behind the tanker was also lucky to escape being involved in the crash, she said.

"Everyone was very, very lucky."

The tanker, which was travelling south, came to rest about 100m from the scene of the accident on the opposite side of the road.

The Landcruiser was spun 180deg and came to rest on its side.

Police were still investigating the cause of the crash last night, she said.

"At this stage it's not totally clear what happened, but they definitely connected." The Toyota Landcruiser is owned by power company Electrix and the tanker, which was empty, is owned by Andrew's Transport of Riversdale.

Traffic was diverted when the road was closed for more than two hours.
