The Mataura RSA Daffodil Day variety concert last Friday night was an entertainment-packed extravaganza, which raised almost $700 for the Cancer Society of New Zealand.

Convener of the concert Don Neilson, who is a past-president of the Mataura RSA, said it was virtually the same amount raised in 2008 and was a successful night.

The headline act at the concert was entertainer Nick Bourke and his band and other performers included The Mataura Kilties Pipe Band with pipe major Tony Cruickshank, Gore-based country artists Max McCauley and Ron Mitchell.

Violinist Michaela Roy (13) and Mr Neilson, on piano, played a duet and there were rousing performances from Maureen Calvert and Bev and Brian Townley, among others.

Supper was put on by the Mataura Lions Club and the wider community.

People came from as far away as Alexandra and Dunedin, and generously donated to the worthy cause.

The annual concert ended just after midnight and there was a courtesy coach available to take patrons home.

Mataura RSA Clubrooms manager Tina Brand said the concert had proven to be very popular in the past and everyone got right behind it again this year.
