Driver seriously injured after hitting cow

Police are asking for information following a serious crash in Dacre, Southland, on Thursday.

Senior Constable Simon Ballantyne, of Invercargill, said police wanted to speak to anyone who might have seen the crash on the Edendale-Woodlands Highway (State Highway 1).

A person was seriously injured after they drove into a cow.

The driver of the car was reportedly trapped for a time then freed and airlifted to Dunedin Hospital, where they remained in a serious but stable condition.

Police said yesterday they wanted to speak to witnesses to the crash as well as people who assisted after the incident.

■ Police in Oamaru are appealing for information after an abandoned car was set on fire at Robbs Crossing yesterday morning.

The Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade was called at 5.30am. Acting Sergeant Paul Alden, of Oamaru, said police were treating the fire as arson.
