Eighteen-month-old Arlo Harding just could not help himself yesterday at Queens Park in Invercargill.

As the violins, guitars and ukulele played toe-tapping ditties, Arlo danced away to the beat with vigour and joy.

When his parents were asked where he got his rhythm from they quickly replied, "neither of us".

Arlo’s family was just one of the hundreds who turned out for the Rotary Club of Invercargill North Family Fun Day.

The sun shone down on people who walked, scooted, skateboarded, and cycled their way to the band rotunda where entertainment was provided from the back of a truck.

For those seeking something more active, there was swing ball, soccer and a rock trail through the rose garden.

Children were able to climb aboard a fire truck and get a feel for what was like to sit inside.

Also popular were the police and search and rescue dogs.

For Nathan Johnstone, of Invercargill, his favourite thing was meeting Invercargill search and rescue dogs Boss and Pippi.

When asked why, he replied, "Because I like dogs."

The dogs, which are sponsored by business owners in Invercargill, were used by both fire and police, Firefighter Murray Milne-Maresca said.

The Rotary Club held the event to encourage people to take time out with their families to enjoy free entertainment in the park setting.
