Fire 'burning like a volcano'

A deep-seated fire near a forestry block in Western Southland was ‘‘burning like a volcano’’.

A Fire Service spokesman said crews from Athol, Blackmount, Dipton and Hedgehope were called to the fire at Cairn Peak Station, Dipton, about 7.30pm on Saturday

The fire was at a skidder site, where logs are cut, at the station.

A large pile of offcuts from the logs were ‘‘burning like a volcano’’.

The fire was contained to the site and was not threatening forestry.

The blaze had been difficult to extinguish and firefighters returned to the station yesterday to continue working on it, the spokesman said.
