City councillors approved a request by the institute for ICC to supply them with dog cadavers at a Regulatory Services Committee meeting on Tuesday.
A report received at the meeting suggested the institute sought "three to four fresh cadavers" over a one-year period to enable students to gain practical skills in performing dental procedures, and preparation for surgery, as well as undertaking euthanasia on site.
In using the cadavers, students would benefit from gaining anatomy knowledge, trades and technology head of faculty Doug Rodgers said.
"It’s all done very ethically, respectfully, and very carefully," he said.
The request was part of a wider report from an Independent Community Panel with recommendations regarding the rehoming and euthanasia of impounded dogs.
The panel was formed after footage emerged in September 2017 showing a dog being killed by captive bolt gun at the city pound, which caused huge public outcry.
Conditions regarding the supply of dog corpses included the institute collect a maximum of five dogs per year which were unclaimed and unsuitable for rehoming, with a recommendation for euthanasia. The institute would undertake the euthanasia procedure by lethal injection and dispose of the cadavers by cremation.
