A 20-year-old Invercargill man has been arrested in relation to the alleged sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl at Oreti Beach at the weekend.
The girl was playing at the beach about 4pm on Saturday when the incident occurred.
It is understood she was there with her family and was assaulted when she went into the sand dunes to go to the toilet.
In a statement last night, police said they had identified a "male suspect".
The arrested man was due to appear in the Invercargill District Court this morning.
Police would still like to hear from anyone who may have been at Oreti Beach around 4pm on Saturday.
