A man has been found dead after a crash in Southland overnight.
Police received word around 6am that a vehicle had collided with a fence and left the road on the State Highway 99, south of Jenkins Rd, near Tuatapere.
Police believe the crash happened after midnight.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
The death took the Labour Weekend holiday road toll to five as at 9am today..
On Friday night, motorcyclist Ethan Nathaniel Bishop (18) died in a crash near Otorohanga, in the North Island.
On Saturday two people lost their lives in a crash on State Highway 1 at Oakleigh, south of Whangārei. Two other people, including a child, were also injured in the crash.
Denise Wilson, who saw emergency services attending to the victims from her Totara Rd house, said the scene was "horrific".
"It's just horrific ... and this comes after several other fatal accidents we've had."
Yesterday afternoon one person died in a three-car crash on Great South Rd in Auckland. Another person was taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries.
Over Labour Weekend last year, six people lost their lives on New Zealand roads.
