A 32-year-old man is facing a charge of manslaughter in relation to a death at an Invercargill rugby club earlier this month.
The man had already been charged with assault in relation to the death of 27-year-old Chanel Lee Simmonds, also known as Chanel Lee Henwood, after an incident at a birthday party at the Marist Old Boys Rugby Football Club in Georgetown on February 10.
In a statement today, police said the man was now facing a charge of manslaughter.
After the incident, Marist club president Bill Dowling said the clubrooms had been hired out for a "private function" that had no affiliation with the club.
The private event was originally intended to have been held elsewhere but that venue had been double booked, Mr Dowling said.
The accused will reappear in Invercargill District Court tomorrow.
