Motorcyclist dies in Southland collision

A motorcyclist  died after colliding with a ute near Wallacetown, in Southland, yesterday.

It was the third fatal crash on New Zealand's roads during the long weekend.

The serious crash unit was investigating the crash, which occurred about 3pm yesterday at the intersection of Underwood-Linds Bridge Rd and State Highway 99, police said.

The cause of the crash, which partially closed both roads yesterday, remained under investigation.

Police said the 56-year-old man died at the scene.

The Wallacetown crash was the only incident of note in the Southern district. Police were called to minor crashes elsewhere in the district.

A driver ploughed through a Mosgiel property's fence, grazing the house, early yesterday.

A car rolled near Clinton on Sunday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said.

The car went through a fence and ended up in a paddock near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Robertson Rd, about 5km from Clinton, the spokeswoman said.

A woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital after hitting a parked car in Eglinton Rd, in Mornington, Dunedin, on Sunday night.

The incident appeared to have been caused by a medical event, the spokeswoman said.

There was also a non-injury crash in Great King St yesterday morning.

Police were out in force on Southern roads and a lowered speed tolerance of 4kmh was in place.

Southern district acting road policing manager Inspector Steve Larking said police were pleased with the driving witnessed by officers.

``Police are very happy with driver behaviour in the region over the long weekend,'' he said.

The other two fatal crashes over the long weekend happened on Sunday.

About 11am, ambulance stuff and fire crews received reports of a serious crash on State Highway 1, south of Paekakariki.

A woman, the driver of one of the vehicles involved, was airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition. She later died in hospital.

Police yesterday named her as 79-year-old Levin local Te Rauoriwa Daphne Pomare.

A former member of the NZ Police, she was thought to be one of the country's first detectives of Maori descent.

The person killed south of Auckland early on Sunday is yet to be named by authorities.

Emergency crews were called to the Southern Motorway, near Pokeno, just after 4.30am.

A car collided with a median strip before hitting a truck.

Five people died on the road last Labour Weekend.
