Murder accused appears in court

The mother of a 9-year-old boy found dead in the small Southland settlement of Otautau last month cried as the murder accused appeared in court yesterday.

The person charged with murder appeared by audiovisual link at the High Court in Invercargill and was remanded in custody until their next court appearance on February 11 next year.

No bail application was made by counsel Bill Dawkins.

Details about the person's identity, including their age and sex, are suppressed.

The accused was arrested in November, the day after the boy's body was found.

About eight members of the boy's family were in court and were emotional during proceeding.
