NZ tourism industry body’s conference headed for South

The Tourism Export Council of New Zealand (TECNZ) will make a visit to Southland for the first time with its 2024 annual conference.

The conference will be held in August and will bring together industry influencers who buy and sell tourism to domestic and international visitors.

Great South general manager of tourism and events Mark Frood said the conference came about through the work of local tourism operators, inbound tourism operators and Great South.

"We’ll be showcasing our region’s stories, what’s new: the Invercargill city centre, new hotels, innovations, foods, beverages, and visitor experiences, all mixed in with our world-famous southern hospitality."

TECNZ chief executive Lynda Keene said the board had kept its eye on the region.

After board members had learnt about the two new hotels in Invercargill that would be opened in the next 12 to 24 months, they had an immediate interest to consider the region as a destination for their annual conference.

"Great South has been proactive in promoting their region to the TECNZ board over the past two years.’’

The visit would provide inbound tour operations (a chance to see the progress of the region, so it could be more actively promoted to offshore markets, she said.

TECHNZ board members were looking forward to working with Great South over the next year to develop a conference programme, she said.
