Overnight search for missing hunter on Stewart Island

A search and rescue operation will continue overnight for a missing hunter on Stewart Island.

Detective Alun Griffiths said a 39-year-old man -  who was a part of a group of 13 people hunting on the island - failed to return to the group on Monday afternoon.

Invercargill and Stewart Island’s Land Search and Rescue team and Police Search and Rescue staff have been part of the operation since Tuesday.

Thermal technology was being used, as well as a Land Search and Rescue search dog from Dunedin.

Det Griffiths said currently there are 17 searchers, made up of Land Search and Rescue volunteers and also Police Search and Rescue staff, who will remain out overnight.

"They are focusing their efforts on the North Lords hunting block."

Additional LandSAR and Police Search and Rescue teams from Dunedin will join the search tomorrow, he said.
