The names of Southland soldiers have been put on the map as the Places of Remembrance project continued south this week.

For the first time in the region, four street signs were adorned with poppies to honour Southland servicemen who fought in World War 2.

The project, established in 2014, identified and recorded New Zealand streets and other places directly related to people and events from the country’s military history.

Hinton Court, Checketts Pl, Mepal Pl and Lancaster St all bore names which remembered soldiers, or relevant places from the war.

Mayor Tim Shadbolt (pictured above) said he fondly remembered  Victoria Cross recipient Sgt Jack Hinton, for whom Hinton Court was named.

Sgt Hinton received the Victoria Cross for his actions at Kalamata on  April 29, 1941, during the Battle of Greece.

The signs had come at a fitting time following Armistice Day as people still remembered the Southland soldiers who fought to liberate the French town Le Quesnoy on November 4, 1918, Mr Shadbolt said.
