Police called after reports of 'strong chemical smell'

Cordons have been removed and police are still present at an incident in Invercargill where there were reports of a 'strong chemical smell'.

Police said, emergency services were called to The Haven, on Tyne St, at about 2:15pm after reports of a 'strong chemical smell'.

"The fire service soon confirmed that the chemical smell was coming from an individual using cannabis oil," police said.

Police were still looking for the alleged offender.

The motel was evacuated as a precaution, as were nearby residences, police said.

Cordons were been put in place as a precaution and extra staff were deployed to help move pupils at a school nearby.

Police directed traffic and the pupils to ensure safety.
