Police seek help after man shot

Police are appealing to the public for information after a shooting at an Invercargill property on Saturday night.

One man was last night reported to be in a serious but stable condition in Southland Hospital after having suffered a gunshot wound.

A spokeswoman said the person or people involved were still at large, and police were working to locate them.

The incident happened in Brown St, Strathern, on Saturday night, and anyone who might have noticed any suspicious behaviour or vehicles in the area around 8pm on Saturday is urged to call 105.

Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said yesterday police wanted to reassure the community the shooting was an isolated incident.

A scene examination was under way yesterday and he said residents should expect a continued police presence in the area. No further updates, including whether or not police had any leads, were available on yesterday afternoon.

Police did not answer questions as to whether the shooting could have been gang-related, or say how Insp Bowman knew it was isolated.

A woman who lived on the street told Stuff there had been an incident earlier in the week involving guns at a house on the street.

A neighbouring house in Brown St had its windows shot at, and earlier that night she said she had heard a woman screaming and a vehicle had been circling the block for about an hour.
