A fire that gutted the former Ohai Golf Club rooms on Thursday night is being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at about 11.30pm and it was well advanced by the time they arrived, a firefighter at the scene said.

Detective Regan Fahey, of Winton, said the building was "pretty much destroyed".

The fire was being treated as suspicious until determined otherwise, he said.

"Because of the way the building was not being used and it was all locked up, those sort of things which give us cause to think something has happened that’s suspicious," he said.

Appliances from Ohai and Nightcaps and a tanker from Otautau fought the blaze until about 2.30am.

Police are urging anyone with any information to contact them on (03) 236-6060.

The owner of the building declined to comment.
