The sentencing of a man who sparked a manhunt across Southland after stealing police guns and a patrol car has been postponed.

Hori Irimana Gemmell (24) appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully being in possession of a pistol, unlawfully possessing ammunition in public, two charges of theft from a car, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and reckless driving.

The charges are in relation to an incident in August in Gore where he rammed police cars and stole two loaded police pistols.

He also admitted a charge of breaching a release condition.

During the hearing this week, an issue was raised by his defence lawyer, Sonia Vidal. Judge Bernadette Farnan suppressed all information discussed in the hearing and rescheduled the sentencing for March 10.
