A fire which gutted the former Ohai golf club rooms last night is being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were alerted around 11:30pm to the blaze which was ''well involved'' by the time they arrived, a firefighter at the scene said.

Detective Regan Fahey, of Winton, said the building was “pretty much destroyed”.

The fire was being treated as suspicious until determined otherwise, he said.

“Because of the way the building was not being used and it was all locked up, those sort of things which give us cause to think something has happened that’s suspicious,” he said.

Crews with two appliances, including a water tanker, fought the blaze until around 2:30am.

Police are urging anyone with any information to contact them on (03) 2366-060.
