Self-employed hairdresser Nicola Tohiarika, of Invercargill, cuts the hair of Jessica Bastiaansen Gutsell (2) at the Free Haircuts and Other Services for Those in Need event in Invercargill yesterday.

Held at Aurora College, the eighth twice-a-year event was designed to support those most in need in Southland's community. From haircuts, to massages and food, services were provided to community members at no cost.

Riverside Rentals had also provided a van so volunteers could transport those who needed a ride to and from the event.

Since organiser Melissa Aitken appeared on TV One's Good Sorts segment in February, the idea had caught on nationally with an event being held in Wellington last month.
