Tobacco taken in armed dairy hold-up

Police are investigating after an Invercargill dairy was robbed by two men armed with a hammer and a knife on Wednesday night.

The men came into the Pomona St Discount, on the corner of Pomona St and Tramway Rd, as the dairy owner was cleaning up.

He was threatened by two men with a hammer and a knife about 9.30pm, who are believed to have just taken tobacco and cigarettes.

Police were called by neighbours who heard screaming.

A police spokeswoman said a police dog unit was deployed to catch the men, but did not find them.

Police said one man was wearing a blue hoodie with white writing, grey track pants with two blue stripes on each side, black shoes and a black peaked cap.

The other was wearing a grey hoodie, grey cap with a red peak, and possibly blue overalls, police said.

‘‘Both men, wearing red bandanas over their faces, were described as fair skinned.’’
