Toes were tapping while dancers aged between 5 and 72 years old lined up to compete for an array of trophies and accolades at the 2022 Invercargill Rock ’n’ Roll Club Championships held in the James Hargest College gym on Saturday.

The annual competition has been held since the club opened in 1985.

Club president Karl Herman said rock’n’roll dancing could be quite addictive.

Many of the club’s members had started when they were young after being introduced to it by a family member or friend.

It was a very family-oriented activity, which allowed people of all ages to get involved.

Many of the more senior dancers enjoyed the social aspect of the club, while the junior members tended to focus on the competitions, Mr Herman said.

"We have the largest junior club in New Zealand."

He thought the Invercargill club was well represented across a wide range of age groups from its 180 members. The competitions in particular were well supported and attracted about 200 spectators.

"It’s the only time in the year anyone from Invercargill can see some good-quality rock’n’roll dancing.

"And it’s the only chance they will get to see some of New Zealand’s top dancers performing."

The club had one dancing pair, Ellexa Robins and Josh McNaughton, who had been dancing partners for the past 13 years. They were about to graduate into the adult age group after starting their dancing careers together when they were only 5. The pair were unable to make their final junior-senior appearance on Saturday because of a Covid-19 infection.

They won first place at the 2021 New Zealand nationals.
