Two fires in Southland, one near Karitane

Fore crews battled scrub and grass blazes in Tahakopa Valley near Papatowai yesterday and another on Round Hill Rd, inland from Karitane.

Four tankers and three crews remain at Round Hill Rd.

Fenz assistant area commander Phil Marsh said the Round Hill fire involved 100 bales of baleage, and crews and machinery were working at the scene.

Helicopters were sent to deal with the Tahakopa Valley fire, which was in a forestry block.

In Southland, another fire broke out in a forest company yard near Invercargill. Fanned by strong winds, the fire spread from a pile of vegetation into grass in Kekeno Pl, near the Invercargill-Bluff Highway.
