Woman hurt in Southland home invasion

Police are investigating after a woman was injured by an intruder in her Southland home last night.

Detective Chris Lucy, of Gore, said a man with a knife entered the woman's house on Blaydon St in Waikaia about 9.15pm and demanded to be let into a gun cabinet.

A struggle ensued and the man left when the woman screamed, Stuff reports.

The man is described as being about 30 years old, about 180cm tall, with short dark hair, prominent cheek bones and a small pot belly.

He was wearing a black hoodie, black Canterbury brand sweatpants and black shoes.

The woman received scrapes and bruises in the incident, Stuff reports.

On Wednesday night, the garage at the house was broken into.

Police said they believed nothing was taken in that incident but they were not ruling out whether the two incidents were connected.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Det Lucy: 03 203 9300.
