Two experienced local body politicians, Ella Lawton and Gary Kelliher, will run for the vacant Dunstan ward seat on the Otago Regional Council in a by-election next month.

Electoral officer Pam Jordan said there were only two nominations received for the by-election, which will be held on June 20.

Postal voting will open three weeks before election day.

Both candidates have already served as councillors: Dr Lawton for three and a-half years on the Queenstown Lakes District Council and Mr Kelliher for one term on the regional council.

Dr Lawton is hoping to fill the seat left vacant by the death of her mother, Maggie Lawton, last month.

Mr Kelliher is hoping to be re-elected to the council after missing out by just five votes to Cromwell-based councillor Michael Laws at last year's local body elections.

His application for a recount was denied by district court judge Paul Kellar.

A by-election for Dr Lawton's former Wanaka ward seat on the district council will be held in June. Nominations will be called for in May.
