Between 5000 and 7000 books have been donated for this weekend’s book sale, which in previous years has raised as much as $15,000 from books starting at $1.
Rotary member Mike Elliott said funds raised had been redistributed back into the community.
"It’s been a real mix-and-match, but we very much see where we can help ... within the local community," Mr Elliott said.
Drop-offs of book donations began in May at Mitre 10 Mega.
Once collected, the books were sorted into genres by volunteers in preparation for this weekend.
About a dozen volunteers began setting up the books on Thursday for the sale, which began yesterday.
The book sale is open today from 10am-4.30pm and tomorrow from 10am-2pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre.
