Police have named the man whose body was recovered from Lake Wanaka.

He was David Barry Fisher (26), of Tauranga.

Police were advised that Mr Fisher had gone missing just off Stevensons Island at midday on Friday while trying to retrieve a drifting boat.

Police said another person swam out to help Mr Fisher at the time, but that person wasn't able to locate him.

The Police National Dive Squad arrived in the area on Saturday and found Mr Fisher's body at 3.30pm, not far from where he went missing.

Police said today their thoughts were with the family.

The death had been referred to the Coroner.
