Canyoner airlifted out of national park

A person canyoning in Mount Aspiring National Park had to be rescued yesterday after suffering a knee injury and being unable to walk.

A police spokesman said police were alerted to the incident at 12.40pm, and a helicopter was required to extract the patient from the scene.

The person was part of a tour group, he said.

The helicopter was organised by the parties involved and the patient was taken to the Wanaka Medical Centre for attention.

Neither Wanaka Search and Rescue nor the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter were involved in the operation.
