Competitors in The Great Kahu Youth Cardboard Boat Race try to keep their boats afloat on Lake Wanaka yesterday.

More than 20 boats were entered in the race and about 150 spectators  watched the race and the polar plunge into Lake Wanaka, both organised by the Kahu Youth Trust.

Organiser Richard Elvey said he was happy with the turnout which was similar to previous years.

"You never know how many people you are going to get along to these events but with more than 20 boats entered and all the kids taking part in  the plunge, it’s safe to say we are chuffed," Mr Elvey said.

Other events held in Wanaka yesterday  included the annual Rotary Club of Wanaka duck race down Bullock Creek and a second-hand bike sale to mark the start of the month-long cycling festival Bike’vember.
