The Police National Dive Squad has been called in to assist with searching for a man who got into trouble in Lake Wanaka today.

Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said the man got into trouble after he swam out from Stevensons Island to retrieve a boat that was adrift.

"Another person swam out to help him but that person wasn’t able to locate him, " he said.

The dive squad had been called in and would arrive in Wanaka tomorrow about midday to help with the search, he said.

Earlier today, police said they were trying to locate the man in the Stevensons Arm area of the lake.

A police spokeswoman said police were sent to Lake Wanaka shortly after midday.

Police said a helicopter with paramedics on board was helping with the search alongside the coast guard, police and LandSAR volunteers.
