One of Wanaka's well-known buildings is to be sold, re-purposed and removed.

Wanaka i-Site manager Jaimee McGrath said the i-Site kiosk on the corner of Ardmore and Helwick Sts was being advertised for sale as it was no longer required.

The solar-powered kiosk had been a permanent fixture on the prominent corner for nearly 12 years.

Originally, it had been the point of contact for the public when Wanaka i-Site was housed in the lakefront log cabin, providing booking services and information for tourists.

When Wanaka i-Site moved into its present premises, directly behind the kiosk, in October 2014, it had become ''surplus to requirements'', Ms McGrath said.

She said the kiosk had been advertised for sale on the i-Site network for the past few months but no-one had made an offer.

On Friday, it was advertised publicly with a starting bid of $7050 and ''a lot of local Wanaka businesses have shown quite a bit of interest''.

At this stage, there were no plans to use the money from the sale of the kiosk. It would go into a ''rainy day'' fund, she said.

Queenstown Lakes District Council parks and reserves planning manager Stephen Quin said there were no plans to re-rent the space on the building side of Ardmore St.
