The Cardrona Alpine Resort has announced plans to install a quad chairlift to open up 55ha of new, advanced ski terrain.

The area, below the Captain's Basin, is known as "Pringles".

The lift to be used will be the "repurposed" McDougalls quad removed last year to make way for the Chondola.

The Pringles terrain will include a main intermediate trail, a series of expert and advanced chutes, and a trail that extends around the front of the mountain to the bottom of the Valley View quad.

General manager Bridget Legnavsky said she was "stoked" to be able to offer more advanced terrain to skiers and snowboarders.

"The terrain on offer with Pringles is unlike anything we offer at Cardrona at the moment."

Pringles has a south-facing aspect, with reliable snow conditions throughout the winter, she said.

The new lift will increase capacity at Cardrona by more than 25%, from 5500 to 7000 skiers per hour, and will take pressure off the Captain's Express and Whitestar Express lifts.

The new lift will take the skiable area at Cardrona to 400ha, with future plans to increase the skifield's size to 900ha when the neighbouring Soho ski area is incorporated.
