New school’s board chairman to be chosen this week

The first formal meeting of the newly formed establishment board of trustees of Wanaka’s new primary school will be held on Friday.

The chairman would be chosen then, governance facilitator for the board Cleave Hay said last Monday.

The members of the board, appointed by the Ministry of Education are: \

Amy Watson — a secondary school teacher who has worked in primary schools as a specialist physical education teacher. She has taught in  Australia and the United Kingdom and has coached gymnastics and netball.

Jude MacArthur — a senior lecturer at the Institute of Education at Massey University, located off-campus in Dunedin. Ms MacArthur is a qualified primary school teacher and has previously worked as a lecturer in education at the University of Otago and as a senior researcher at the Donald Beasley Institute in Dunedin.

She teaches specialist teaching to postgraduate teachers at present.

Gena Bagley — obtained a double degree at the University of Otago before teaching at Columba College. She then moved on to Mount Aspiring College in 2005 where she has taught drama and English, been the head of the drama department and, since 2011, been head of the English learning area.

Anna Roseingrave — has worked in education for more than 20 years, and has experience as a principal.

Dr Ian Hall — was principal of the Otago Polytechnic between 1985 and 1992 and the Christchurch College of Education between 1996 and 2004. Since then, he has worked as a director of a polytechnic in the United Arab Emirates and in various countries as a project director and senior consultant with Cognition Education Ltd, focusing on the professional development of teachers, and school leadership.

One of the board’s first tasks will be to draft a project plan to identify the tasks that need to be completed before the school opens in 2020.

The school, which will cater for 400 pupils, is referred to by the ministry as Wanaka South Primary.

Construction is due to begin late this year on a 3ha site between the new Wanaka Recreation Centre and Ballantyne Rd.
