Poison being laid

Dog owners in Wanaka are being advised to keep their pets on a leash near the Clutha River outlet and Outlet Rd as a rabbit-control operation gets under way.

About 233ha of land neighbouring Outlet Rd and near the Clutha River outlet will be treated with Pindone poison to control rabbit numbers from July 31 until August 7.

It is a joint operation between the Queenstown Lakes District Council and the private landowners.

The poison will be administered using carrots as bait.

Areas being treated with the poison include Sticky Forest, the North Lake subdivision area and the Outlet Motor Camp.

Warning signs will be in place while the operation is ongoing to advise people where the poisons have been used.

Until the signs have been removed, the area should be treated with caution.

Excell Biosecurity has been contracted to carry out the rabbit-control programme.
