Riding a wave of success

Capturing a different perspective on a wave near Allans Beach on Otago Peninsula has won Wanaka student Oscar Hetherington the $10,000 top prize — ahead of 3000 New Zealand and Australian entries — in the fifth annual Sony Alpha photography awards, announced last night.

Mr Hetherington, who is a photography student at Otago Polytechnic, said he knew as soon as he took the photo a couple of months ago it had potential.

"It’s a different perspective of something people see every day."

His photo, titled back wash, was taken with an Alpha 7 III camera and FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
