Wanaka residents are being asked to describe what they love about their community, in an effort to preserve that special quality in the face of rapid growth.

The Wanaka community collaboration incubator Link Upper Clutha launched the 3 Questions survey on Monday. It asks: 1.

What do you love about your community?

2. How could it be even better? 3. How could you help? Link Upper Clutha facilitator Kathy Dedo said the group could not solve the big issues such as  housing affordability, but the survey  would hopefully  identify strengths in the community that could be built on, identify talents  Wanaka residents have, and help prioritise which community-led projects should be supported.

The Link team had been talking to community groups and leaders about these issues, but the survey was intended  to make sure every Wanaka resident had a chance to contribute their ideas.

Wanaka Community Board member and Link steering group acting chairwoman Ruth Harrison urged residents to take part.

"Wanaka is going through a lot of change. We can’t stop it happening but this survey can help us to identify what is worth preserving and how we can add to the community."

"It could be as simple as looking at your local park and thinking how can we make this a nicer space for kids," she said.

The survey can be found online at Link’s new website, www.link.org.nz, printed  in the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s "Scuttlebutt" publication, and in person when the Link team visits supermarkets and other public places with the  3 Questions.

The survey closes on March 6.  The data will be  available to local authorities and the public.
