Hayden Findlay, who has recently moved to Wanaka from Auckland, was awarded the title, and $10,000 of prizes, on Wednesday.
The aim of the competition is to encourage more young people to join the industry, which is considered to be in need of 2000 more qualified trades people.
To win the award, Mr Findlay had to install a basic bathroom in four hours, and also pass a theory test.
