Treble Cone postpones ski season

The start of Treble Cone's ski season is to be postponed because of a lack of snow.

Treble Cone Ski Area chief executive Jackie van der Voort said the decision was due to some unusually warm temperatures over the past week. The ski area was due to open on Thursday.

"The Home Basin has insufficient snow cover to proceed with opening day as scheduled and unfortunately we will be postponing the start of the 2017 season."

Despite receiving snowfall earlier in the month, the temperatures on the mountain meant not enough snow was able to be made to get the run open.

Operational staff were monitoring the forecast closely and weather services forecast freezing levels to drop during the week.

Treble Cone staff were hopeful temperatures would fall even further allowing more snow to be made on the main runs in the Home Basin, putting the mountain in a position to open.

``All our staff are ready to go as soon as the snow does come and we are hoping that the colder temperatures are not far away. Unfortunately, the mountain has been experiencing extremely warm conditions for this time of year.

"Our Base Building sits at 1260m altitude, which is one of the lowest in the Southern Lakes making it difficult in these weather conditions to create
snow all the way down to our base.

``We will open as soon as we physically can for all of our customers, the ski community and staff.''
