An overcast day presented "spot-on" conditions for the Wānaka Rodeo yesterday, with an estimated crowd of 5000 people watching the action.

Wānaka Rodeo Club president Deanna McCarthy said the day had been "awesome", with an energetic crowd filling the grass bank surrounding the arena.

"We’ve got a great crowd, the weather’s been spot-on for what we want. Yeah it’s run really well so we’re pretty happy."

This year marked the introduction of breakaway roping, bringing the total number of compulsory events to eight.

A variation of calf roping, breakaway roping sees a rider attempt to rope a calf but not throw and tie them.

Mrs McCarthy herself took part, placing second in the women’s breakaway roping event.

Now in its 61st year, the Wānaka Rodeo takes place in Albert Town every January 2.
