The worst of the storm may have passed but the wintry blast has made conditions difficult for motorists on some southern roads this morning.

The NZ Transport Agency has issued snow and ice warnings for State Highway 87, Outram-Kyeburn; and SH85, Palmerston-Kyeburn.

The Central Otago District Council advises that the Danseys Pass road is closed owing to snow, from the gate past the Danseys Pass Hotel.

It also advises caution in the Maniototo and Manuherikia areas.

A hard frost this morning and light rain and sleety showers had made roads slippery.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council said this morning snow was falling on the Crown Range road and chains must be carried.

Conditions are expected to improve across the region during the day.

MetService said snow was possible on the Lindis Pass, Crown Range and Milford roads until lunchtime or early afternoon, but little was expected to settle.
