Anti-1080 occupation

Anti-1080 protesters have spent the past two days occupying helicopter pads north of Westport, and they vow to do so again.

The West Coast is in the middle of some of the largest 1080 poison drops in history, due mainly to the Department of Conservation’s "Battle for our Birds".

Protesters hope to rally supporters through social media as soon as the aerial drops actually start.

Veteran Westport conservationist Peter Lusk said he started the sit-in about noon on Wednesday, and again yesterday.

Today was too wet with no chance of the helicopters flying anyway.

Mr Lusk said he not believe they had held up any of the poison drops, as the contractors needed five clear days.

However, he said the protesters would return whenever there was a spell of dry weather.

The protests had taken place in Seddonville and it was planned to do the same at Karamea.
