A rogue oil changer who poured used oil into the Greymouth PGG Wrightsons car park on Sunday is in the sights of the West Coast Regional Council.

The council was called to the site yesterday and has obtained some CCTV footage of the likely offender.

Council consents and compliance manager Heather McKay, said someone had purchased four packs of oil from a Greymouth service station and then proceeded to undertake their oil change in the PGG Wrightsons car park.

The person poured out the old oil onto the parking area.

"Our staff responded as soon as we became aware of the incident and have obtained some video still footage of the likely perpetrator.

"We used natural peat which helps to soak up the oil to prevent as much as we can from flowing into the stormwater system."

Mrs McKay said council was seeking public help to identify the person.

"Pouring oil out like this will flow into the stormwater system and end up in our waterways and ocean."

She pointed out that it only took a very small amount of oil to have significant impact once it reached a water way.

"Pending the outcome of its investigation, (the) council had a number of penalty options to deal with the culprit."
