State Highway 73 is closed near Arthur's Pass after a light truck carrying scaffolding crashed into a rock face.
The accident happened about 10am between Settlement Rd and West Coast Rd, a police spokeswoman said.
Police said it appeared the truck hit a rock face after clipping another vehicle from behind.
The driver was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition.
No-one else was injured.
