An Australian man will appear in the Dunedin District Court this week facing charges relating to a three-vehicle crash near Milford Sound on Sunday.
Udit Choudnar (49), of Melbourne, is charged with careless driving causing injury to Julieta Corres and Ludmilla Fernandez on the Milford road on February 1.
He appeared before a registrar in the Queenstown District Court yesterday and was remanded on an intimated guilty plea to appear in Dunedin on Thursday.
Duty solicitor Liam Collins said if the matter could not be finally dealt with on Thursday, Choudnar asked for it to be brought back to Queenstown on Monday.
''He understands if he does not plead guilty in Dunedin, he must remain in Queenstown to defend the matter.''
His bail conditions included not driving a motor vehicle and to surrender his passport by 2pm yesterday.
The Otago Daily Times reported yesterday the crash, on State Highway 94 about 10km from Milford, happened about 2pm.
A 24-year-old Argentinian was trapped in the sedan she was driving when it was hit by a Toyota Prado travelling towards Te Anau.
The woman was flown to Southland Hospital in a serious condition.
Her passenger was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
