These wintry scenes on the West Coast yesterday were not snow but foam thrown up along the coast by a combination of big seas and gale-force winds.

The road between the twin coastal townships of Granity and Ngakawau was hit, making for an interesting trip for motorists.

In Cobden and along the Greymouth leg of the coastal cycle trail, the foam first started almost two hours before high tide, just before 2pm.

It flew over Jellyman Park and the aerodrome, and by mid-afternoon it was waist deep in parts.
